They say blood is thicker than water, but when what runs through your veins is music, you are part of an even bigger family than the one into which you were born. Such is the bond between the members of D’Family. Formed in 2010, D’Family is strengthening that bond to become a global music powerhouse.
The heart of the band is Denver D. Called to music as a child, Denver has followed in the footsteps of many great musicians who came out of the famous Alpha Boys School in Jamaica. He was trained in multiple instruments at the school and has used his talent to become a Master Percussionist, well beyond his years — an accomplished and respected musician, composer, producer and singer. Denver could easily be a one-man band, however his hand-picked band, “D’Family”, helps to embellish his talents that much more.
Having already toured half the world with Jimmy Cliff, Luciano, and others, including appearances on a number of international festivals such as Rotodam, Blue Balls, Reggae Sumfest and Jamaica’s Jazz & Blues Festival, to name a few, Denver has gained much experience and knowledge of global audiences. He has also performed on albums for Grammy winners Stephen and Damian Marley, and for many other artistes as well. The work that Denver has done for a host of artiste in Jamaica’s music industry has duly earned him much respect. The cadre of performers that came together to record his debut album is evidence of the favor he has.
But when Denver wanted to put together a performance band, he looked back at his own musical roots – the formal schooling at Alpha and his years of performance with Ashe. He identified some young musicians from both the Nexus Performing Arts Choir and the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and invited them to become a part of D’Family given their shared passion for music. Since they formed, Denver D and D’Family has performed at several shows around Kingston to great acclaim.
In 2012, Denver D launches his debut album, “Musically Disturbed”, supported by D’Family. This album will not only entertain and educate, but also ultimately inspire. Tracks like “Anna” and “She’s Complicated” are creative and give a nurturing experience to the listener. The music has been described as ‘worldbeat’ with a reggae fusion, incorporating reggae, jazz, pop, R&B and various music genres to create a unique synthesis. The CD is best described as a potpourri of easy listening, dance grooves & rhythmic ballads, to lift the spirit and soothe the soul. Some of the favourites on the album like, “She Wants More” have been singled out, if not for the lyrics, for the composition or just the “reality” of the story.
In performance, the artistry of the album comes alive in the heartfelt lyrics, the well-orchestrated music and the soul-stirring musical talent of this full ten-piece band consisting of keyboards, guitar, bass, drums and percussion, accompanied by a trio of singers. Led by Denver’s driving percussion, audiences will revel in the rebirth of real live music produced by D’Family.
If friends are the family you choose, then a band is like a shared destiny. If you love music, then welcome to D’Family.
