Just like the long bleak and soul numbing cold winters of their Homeland can be so menacing and unforgiving, Ukraine Based Crimson Sky plays some of the nastiest and heaviest yet inspired Goth Doom Metal anywhere... bringing to the table music that raises your soul, while crushes spirits as well. When you hear Crimson Sky for the first time, you are immediately hit by the amount of melody this band has. They are almost heavier than anyone out there today, perhaps heavier than 90% of them, but they accent that with melodies that are as haunting as they are memorable.... and it is the use of the violin in conjunction with the heavy guitars that make it as impressive. A match of instruments that is usually not my cup of tea, yet seems to work so well.

With this over all complexity mixing with a wall of doom riffs, Crimson Sky nails that fine line between being massively heaviness and nearly being musicality operatic. If you don't believe me, just give a listen to The Ode or even The Cross, it will become so damned clear... despite the album being sung in a mixture of Ukrainian and English, these guys deliver doom metal that is very intelligent while keeping thunderous. Simply put, I loved the album... and recommend that people give this band a try. For the Doom Metal fans... this is a must for all. This was one of those times that I truly enjoyed doing this. I will just go back and listen to this album again right after I send this review in.... its up you all of you to get the album for yourselves. Now, where the hell is my beer? ...9.7/10

Crimson Sky is an Ukrainian band founded in 1998, but they started their real activity only recently. "Rising" is their debut album and I can tell you that it was worth the wait. They play a baroque gothic-doom metal rich in strings which reminds me of the old works of bands like Tristania or Theatre of Tragedy. Mixing their native tongue and English, they deliver a musical performance which is melodic and powerful at the same time. I was impressed by the violin skills of Lyudmyla, who is present in all the songs, maybe more than the keyboards. For this reason Crimson Sky slightly reminded me of The Sins of Thy Beloved. Worth mentioning are also the two vocalists, rather talented Bohdan is able to be dramatic and aggressive at the same time, while Olga fascinates us with her opera style. One of the highlight of "Rising" is doubtless "The Ode" which features all the characteristics previously mentioned, followed by the peaceful instrumental "Apoptosis". Strongly advised to lovers of old-school gothic metal!

Crimson Sky is a Gothic/doom formation from Ukraine. Thought the band is formed in 1998, their debut full length "Rising" is out now. This after they reunited in 2010.

This formation brings gothic / doom and the first thing that stands out is the use of violin. These string parts are really a great part of their music and bring the atmosphere, so they are more upfront than you might have expected. Then there are also the keys who compliment the use of strings as well. In general the band have found a good balance in their album, leaving not instrument getting too upfront but a good harmony is made here. The band has also two strong vocalists, thought the male vocals by Bohdan Torchylo are the most outstanding. He has the low, heavy voice but brings his music so calmly and controlled. The female voice comes quite balanced as well, but doesn't have the same impact. What the remark on this release may be is that throughout the track list the intensity seems to remain as quite the same. It has little variations but the leap could have been larger to keep the listeners attention longer. For the listener who hears it for the first there is plenty to discover but those who heard it a couple of times would need something stronger to hold on to while listening. Overall "Rising" is an album that impresses. The string parts are a great add in here and it has great atmospheres. Really a nice release.
