Irieconnections is the first band to fully register for the Scotiabank presents the Global
Battle of the Bands 2010 to be held at Redbones Blues Café on Saturday December
11.
The band which is led by guitarist Courtney Green is based in Montego Bay where they
perform at the hotels Sandals Negril and the Grand Palladium in Hanover. The bulk of
their work is Hotel Gigs and other performances such as corporate functions and
other events such as weddings. Classy background music is their specialty. The
band has been around for 6 years and was started by Courtney through an
opportunity to provide a hotel band for the Point Village
resort in Negril.
After leaving school Courtney started working at the Grand Lido Hotel as a waiter and over
time was promoted to supervisor and benefited from the management training that
he received on the Job. However music as his first love and teaching himself
from books and listening to greats like George Benson he resigned from his job
at Grand Lido and entered the world of being a Hotel Musicians with the
aspiration of one day touring the world as a musician. He soon realised this
objective when he became a member of the backing band “Sane” and performed at Reggae
Sumfest and other local festivals and also travelling to performances in the
Caribbean and USA.
Courtney has been a professional musician for seventeen years and sees Irieconnections
more as a company than a band. The membership of the group is large which
allows them to perform at more than one hotel at a time. Courtney also sees
Irieconnections as a way to nurture and develop talent as he auditions members
carefully and trains them to perform to the standards he requires. It is a form
of mentorship that he admits not being to find when he was seeking to get into
the music business and is quite happy that he is able to impart his experience
to his young musicians most of whom are between 18 and 24 years old, coming primarily
form Church backgrounds and live in Montego Bay and Clarendon.
Courtney dreams to of spreading Irieconnections far and wide and sees the competition as an
opportunity to do just that. He aims for the band to win and go to Malaysia and bring the statuette and $100,000
USD back to Jamaica
to build up the next generation of musicians to conquer the world.
Performing with the band as lead vocalist is Errol Bonnick the former lead singer of Live
Wyaa who were the winners of the Global Battle of the Band competition in 2005
and hopes that he can bring his experience of winning the competition and his
vocal and writing talents to make Irieconnections a winner in 2010.
Errol left Live Wyaa due to differences in direction and has since gone on to pursue recording
projects that fuse his R&B and Roots Reggae stylings with originals and
covers of classic love songs.
