Ray Hitchins

Ray Hitchins is a seasoned music professional
with a wide range of interests, experience
and expertise in music performance and aca-
demia. He is scheduled to complete a doctor-
ate in ethnomusicology in 2011 that focuses
on Jamaican popular music, but continues to
record and perform as a guitarist based in
Kingston, Jamaica.

Most recent notable recordings include work on Stephen Marley’s
Grammy award winning acoustic album ‘Mind Control’ (2009). He
has performed with Beres Hammond, Ziggy Marley, Monty Alexan-
der, Toots and the Maytals, Maxi Priest, Barrington Levy, Alton Ellis,
John Holt, Marcia Griffiths, Freddie McGregor, Ken Booth and Dennis
Brown. Ray has also worked as a signed artist to EMI Electrola and
recorded in Europe with producers such as Roger Bain, Frank Farian,
Michael Cretu and Thomas Kucuck.

Ray’s engineer/productions include work with Toots Hibbert, Black
Uhuru, Yellow Man, The Mighty Diamonds, Garnett Silk, Brian and
Tony Gold, Richie Stevens and Della Manley. He was a JAMI award
recipients for ‘Best Produced Song’ 1997 and ‘Best Engineered Al-
bum’ 1997. He also won a number of Advertising Association awards
for his music productions for Red Stripe Beer, Pepsi, Heineken Beer,
Smirnoff Vodka and Appleton Rum.

As an educator Ray has an associate diploma with the London Col-
lege of Music in classical guitar and taught at the Jamaica School of
Music from 1981 – 1984 as head of the guitar department. He con-
tinues to work as an author for the Hal Leonard Corporation with a
number of published books regarding Jamaican popular music, and a
Star Licks DVD.
